Renovations.

Renovations.

A renovation project is a rewarding experience.

Renovating allows clients to realise that their current home has the potential to provide 21st-century living while avoiding the costs of building or buying a new home. Renovations and extensions are a sound, green choice as they conserve the embodied energy used to manufacture and install building materials. Existing homes come in all shapes and sizes. Still, our experience time and time again is that with the proper skills, even a featureless, poky and dark home can be transformed into one that is more comfortable, beautiful and economical.

Strategies for Sustainable Extensions.

The most common complaints we hear about existing homes are that rooms are too small – and sometime too big – orientation is poor, rooms are dark, circulation is convoluted, the house is cold – or too hot – and energy bills are high. A number of these problems are often inter-related. Our strategy is to identify issues and, as required, simplify and rationalise the floor plan, optimise energy use, incorporate sustainable materials and invite natural light. At Planet Architecture, we are committed to excellence in design and practicality and excited to show you how it can be done sustainably.

What about budget?

It is easier to make extensive changes when a large budget is available as it offers more design options and often allows the transformation of several areas of the house. A modest budget should not be overlooked, as sometimes adding a new window, relocating a bathroom or just pulling down a wall can significantly enhance a home and its livability. We find that one of the keys to a sustainable renovation is to ensure that every square meter of the existing home works hard and well, before considerations of building additional space. Whichever budget is available, we ensure it is spent to maximum effect, increasing livability and sustainability in the process.

Master plan

Using a master plan is another effective way to work with your budget. A master plan establishes the long-term vision of the house transformations.
We then identify two or three stages to suit the available budget at any given time.
Each stage contributes to a greater vision while the first stage allows us to improve living conditions immediately.

How about retrofitting green equipment?

A common strategy to make a house more comfortable and sustainable is to install rainwater tanks and solar panels, seal drafts, insulate the building envelope and use energy-efficient systems for heating and cooling. These measures ensure the house is more self-sufficient and has minimal need for external energy and water sources. We have expertise in advising clients on these matters, can provide appropriate specifications and arrange implementation of such sustainable measures with reliable professionals.

While retrofitting equipment is essential in improving energy efficiency, it will not turn a dark, poky home into a passive solar haven. More often than not, some architectural alterations will be needed to achieve the feel and comfort clients seek. A holistic assessment of budget and site conditions allows us to determine design priorities.
